Coleman Hawkins' Own Selmer Tenor Saxophone !!!
Yes, this is the real thing, your eyes are not deceiving you!!
THIS IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY
TO OWN PART OF JAZZ HISTORY.
This instrument was made in September 1933, with 5 layers of burnished gold plate and unique engraving which shows a scene of a house by a stream in the hills. It was sent by Selmer Paris to Selmer USA at the end of 1933. In February / March 1934, it was sent to Selmer in London for the boss of Selmer London, Mr Ben Davis, to present to Coleman Hawkins on arrival for his European tour. This saxophone is on all photos of Coleman Hawkins up to the end of 1938. In May 1939, whilst playing at the assembly rooms in York, England, he sold it to one of the members of the band. Coleman Hawkins owned this saxophone from 1934 - 1939 and played the instrument with Django Reinhardt. It was used to record such records as 'Honeysuckle Rose', 'Crazy Rhythm', 'Out of Nowhere', etc. It has also appeared on a short film playing 'I wish I were twins'. Coleman Hawkins also used this horn on every recording he made between 1934-39.
We have magnificent photos of the saxophone in today's condition and also photos of the instrument when it was being played in public by Hawkins and publicity shots. We also have lots of newspaper cuttings supporting our knowledge of this instruments history.
All in all a magnificent, unique package for the discerning jazz collector.
We have included 5 detailed pictures of today's condition .
these are detailed and may take a little time to down load.
As you can see from the pictures, this saxophone has lost a lot of the gold plate but the engraving is still immaculate. The body is in excellent condition but would require full repad to play to the level it deserves. It has been left in this condition to allow the buyer to decide to whether to renovate back to original 5 layers of burnished gold plate or leave as original.
We can carry out any of the work by our own highly qualified craftsmen.
All Brass and Woodwind are acting on behalf of a client. This sax is not kept on the premises, please do not call in the shop to view.
