Description
Serial number 265xxx puts this ole boy in the early 1940s. I've never read an official explanation for the "U.S." engraving but it seems logical to guess that the armed forces commissioned a batch of them from the factory for use in WW II military bands. A good solid horn that's been around the block. Who knows -- did it see action in the South Pacific? But I digress.
Altho it never says "Zephyr" on it anywhere, there's little doubt that's what it is. Look for the "flying buttress" neck brace, double tenon socket, triple neckstrap ring, and stylish left pinky key arrangement.
Silver plated neck has matching serial number and a number of pencil-eraser-type dents (bullet wounds?)
Here his how "aanz" (whoever that is!) describes the Zeph: big, gutsy sound... fat, fat lows and solid middle and top end. Neither [alto nor tenor] can be described as sweet sounding, they both remind me of mean dogs straining at their leashes.
Yeah, that's pretty cool, big, fat, and ready to rip ya up. Mmm Hmmm. I have trouble seeing this in a clean tight marine band - - I think it wants to play in those dives where your mother wishes you'd never go.
Lacquer is fairly corrupted. Some solder repairs here and there. Fresh new pads top to bottom! hurray! Regulated and leak free! Makes a pleasing ploonk ploonk sound when you flap your fingers down without blowing thru the horn!
Case is your basic black box. Plush lined, works fine, does not smell, some superficial scuffing.
Anyway, I made a couple sound snippets for your amusement. arpeggios (140k) to show the notes all play, and
the infamous gone2dogz arrangement of Nite Train (190k) just for fun.
No reserve.
Ya know, I always used to use a reserve because the bidders seemed to like it better. Really. More people participated. Now I don't know. Maybe it's because there seem to be a lot of dealers with high reserves, so people tend to flip past the reserve auctions? I dunno.
