In 1939, Leblanc introduced their innovative 'Rationale' model
saxophones to the world at the 1939 Worlds Fair. These instruments
featured an advanced key system that was so complicated, they produced
a repair manual to go with it! All different kinds of keys on these
instruments, combined with a silky smooth tone made these instruments
well ahead of their time. After they were introduced, Leblanc refined
the design slightly and produced the Rationale model saxophones, which
were unfortunately not well received. This instrument is
THE PARTICULAR ALTO SAX that was exhibited at the
1939 WORLDS FAIR
by Leblanc. It has all of the features of the Rationale except it is
missing one of the right hand pinky keys (see pics and compare to
www.saxpics.com). I purchased this instrument from the Leblanc company
museum, and I will include the original museum card documenting that
this horn was exhibited at the world's fair. This horn is in excellent
condition. It appears to have been lacquered, likely after exhibition.
The neck is unlacquered, and I believe bare brass was the original
state of this instrument. I have just had this horn completely repadded
by
BRAD WHERRY of
NORTHWEST WINDS in Seattle, and it
plays very very well. Don't miss this opportunity to own a vital piece
of saxophone history! Includes a gig bag, but not the one shown (that's
a tenor bag-I'll put it in a new alto bag). Pics tell the rest of the
story! Winning bidder to pay $40 shipping. Please feel free to email
