CONN
PORTRAIT MODEL ALTO SAXOPHONE: Gold plated. Original gold plating,
about 85%. Serial #176942 (1926). This is an example of the
exquisite beauty of the late 1920's/early 1930's Conn saxophones. A
number of special order saxophones were produced throughout Conn's
"golden era" and these horns are referred today as either the
"Artist" or "Portrait". This one is a Portrait model as it does not
have pearls on the side keys nor engraving in other areas on the
horn apart from the bell area (where it has extensive engraving on
the bell area). This saxophone was hand engraved with the fine "push
cut" engraving style by one of Conn's leading engravers of that
time. As seen in the many pictures, it features artwork almost
completely around the bell with finely detailed floral patterns; a
unique picture of a beautiful women from the shoulders up, hair
blowing in the breeze; as well as the C.G. CONN LTD. emblem. (Some
of the areas around the engraving are worn down to the silver
plating that lies underneath any gold plating of these saxophones.)
The Conn engravers of this period were artists in the true sense of
the name and it was these artist model saxophones which showcased
their true artistic creativity. The Conn "Portrait Model" saxophones
are quite rare enough and are indeed a treasured piece in any
saxophone collection. This saxophone has been repadded in the last
few months, and features all new fine leather pads with Conn style
metal resonators with the small rivot in the metal, as well as new
felts and corks. It has plastic rollers. There are no dents or
dings. (Slight push remaining in bow will be worked on before sax is
shipped out.) It features the rolled tone holes and tuneable neck.
The neck is in good shape and has a new cork; no dents or bends on
the neck. There is an original case in good condition. A period
mouthpiece with a round chamber will be included. Contact us at
