One-of-a-kind
1924 Buescher True Tone Alto Saxophone
This saxophone was manufactured
early in 1924 at the height of the saxophone craze. The previous
owner took absolutely meticulous care of it, and were it not for the
plating wear on the keys and body, it would be absolutely museum
quality. There are no dents or dings, solder repairs or
history of other repairs. This gorgeous and great-playing
horn also has all of its original Buescher snap-in resonators!
The pads are in pretty bad shape, but the horn plays great from top to
bottom, and despite the pad condition isn't really leaking air.
The intonation is flawless, and the tone sings like very few horns
can. The keywork is extremely ergonomic and responsive.
This horn also features something I've never seen on another vintage
Buescher, and that is a factory-original rose-gold, hand-burnished bell
interior! This horn has it all... including the original
mouthpiece, ligature, cap and gold-plated end plug!
The engraving work on the horn is a mixture of old and new. This
is one of only a few horns I have done exclusively for myself and not
one of my clients. On this one, I took extreme care to only
engrave through the gold plate, exposing the silver beneath it.
Thus, the engraving stands out gloriously -- and believe me when I say
the pictures don't even come close to doing it justice. The neck
was particularly interesting to engrave because there is not an
underside brace on it, so I could engrave all the way around it.
It qualifies as the most elaborate one I have done yet. And,
speaking of the neck, it is in perfect original condition with no
distortions or damage.
The gold plating is mostly there -- say 80%, and extremely thick.
When I engrave a saxophone, I can tell exactly what the quality and
composition of the metal is, and this one is absolutely fabulous.
It's resonant, rich and extremely even. The silver plating under
the gold is also very thick. What a horn!
As anyone who knows me can attest, I always include something extra and
special with my auctions, and this one is no different. I am
throwing in a very, very rare Fultone 4 * mouthpiece. This thing
sounds so good on this horn that I had to add it. You'll also get
a very funky vintage neckstrap, the likes of which I have never seen
before!
Take a look at the pictures, and please
ask questions before the auction closes. Also, please visit
my site, www.dumarsengraving.com,
to see more of my work, and maybe have your own horn engraved.
Under the work log, there are links to two other horns I
will be selling soon -- including a gorgeous Art
Nouveau New Invention Conn, and a neat old fully
engraved New Wonder (Conn "Chu Berry") model.
Now for the pictures. I can easily provide more on request!
I created a very tiny faceted, bright cut at the center of the
lighthouse (you can see it as a brighter dot in this picture), so that
when you rotate the saxophone, it shines exactly like a real
lighthouse. This is just an example of the amount of care and
craftsmanship that went into the work.
I blocked the
serial out for security reasons
