The Vintage Saxophone Gallery Database Project
First of all, this is really, really kewl. At the very core of this project is just a database of all the horns pictured on this website, listing the horn's URL (picture link), date manufactured, etc. That's all I currently have in this database, but this is what I want to do: * Make this database 100% on-line I'm really only having problems with the first and last thing. Everything else will come when I have time to add it! REQUIREMENTS: If you want the FULL version, Microsoft Access or SunOffice -- or equivalent -- is required. You do not need to have an internet connection after you download the necessary software. You just can't access my pictures, unless you've downloaded my entire 1.5gb website :) Here they are:
In all cases, to make the Data Access Pages (i.e. the nice web pages) work, you MUST download the "Non-Microsoft Access Version (Everyone)" files into a folder specifically named c:\saxpics. This may mean that the web pages will not work properly for Macintosh computers. Please also note that the web pages are optimized to work with 1024x768. A smaller size may prevent you from seeing some things properly. ============= A Brief Tour of the Pages Probably the best -- and the most flexible -- page for use is the
Pivot Table. It'll be located in c:\saxpics\pivot_table.htm.
After you enter the date range you want to work with, you'll see something
similar to the following:
If you have no idea how to use a pivot table (as I was),
click on the Question Mark icon If you don't like how the page is sorted, you can click
on a column heading and then click on one of the Alphabetical Sort icons
The links presented in the LocalURL and InternetURL fields will open the picture directory in a new window. The LocalURL field is mainly for me. It won't work for you unless you've downloaded everything into the same directory that I have listed. You can hide this (and other) column by right-clicking on the column name and choosing "remove field". Sorry -- dunno how to do this without right-clicking. Those little down arrow thingies next to the column names will allow you to filter the entire table by what's listed under the down arrow. For example, I could click on the down arrow next to "Pitch" and choose "Eb Alto". The table would then only display all the Eb altos I have listed. If you want to filter by more than one column, use the
Filter icon To refresh the table and enter a different date range, press the F5 function key, press the Refresh button in your browser, or press the Exclamation Mark (!) icon. The best suggestion I have is just to fool around with this. I've only scratched the surface of what you can do with this.
--------------- The other pages are a bit less flexible and they do exactly the same thing, but the data is presented in two different ways. Here's a couple screen shots. Note that you'll ALWAYS be asked for a date range when you get into this. The reason is because I can't think of a way to design a "search" button -- and I have saxophones from 1844 to 2002! The New_Date_Query.htm:
(I've pressed the + next to "Manufacturer", so I can show you everything) The main idea behind this Data Access Page is that everything
is grouped by Manufacturer. To change what manufacturer you're looking at, press one
of the buttons under where it says "New Date Query-Manufacturers
1 of 17". The other buttons will work similarly to those described above.
The New_Date_Query2.htm:
Pretty similar, hunh? The only difference is that there's no manufacturer grouping. Everything else works almost exactly the same.
That's about it. If you have any questions or requests,
