These horns are commonly called "S.A." or "18 - 20" models, because of the engraving on the bell. This is incorrect, as one of my French readers indicated: "S.A." essentially means "Incorporated" and "18 - 20" is Buffet's address. In any event, the name sticks. These are the most elaborate engraved of all the Buffets ever produced. The only significant difference I can see between these and the later "Series VIII" horns is that these horns have wire keyguards. The serial number ranges for these horns is based essentially on a "best guess": I know the introduction date of the Super Dynaction, and the Dynaction model logically preceds that -- and the Series VIII precedes the Dynaction -- and I'm taking it "on faith" by some of the sources where I got these pictures that the date ranges are more-or-less accurate. In any event, it is known that there was a fire
in the Buffet plant around 1940 and all serial number data was destroyed.
The cutoff is approximately s/n 21xxx and restarts with s/n 1 or
100. Production of this series continues until around s/n 1xxx. Techie Notes: |

As above noted, there is strikingly few differences apparent between these and the last Series horns, except for the sheet-metal keyguards. It is possible that bore size was modified slightly, tho. Please also note that these seem to be the first horns to consistently use the "new" (modern) Buffet serial number chart. Extending the serial number range back into the "Buffet SN Black Hole", we can determine the start and end dates of these horns with some degree of accuracy. Serial number range for these horns appears to be around 1xxx to 2xxx. Please note that Buffet seems to have "started over" with a new series of serial numbers when the Dynaction was introduced. ==== Techie Notes: |
